Commenting on the Health Secretary Alan Johnson's announcement that more funds would be available for local fluoridation schemes, the BMA's Head of Science and Ethics, Dr Vivienne Nathanson, said:
"This is very good news. The BMA has been in favour of the fluoridation of mains water supplies for many years. We believe that the fluoridation of water is an effective public health strategy for reducing tooth decay in the population. The evidence shows that water fluoridation is one of the most effective ways of reducing tooth decay in the community. Different communities have different needs and it is essential that there is local debate and a democratic process before any final decisions are made. We hope that as schemes develop there will be continued research to establish the effects of the fluoridation programme."
