The GDC has set up a new working group to look at how best to assess overseas (non-EEA) dental care professionals' suitability for UK registration.
The Overseas DCPs Registration Working Group aims to establish assessments for clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental nurses, dental technicians, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists who do not have a UK or recognised European qualification and who wish to apply for registration to work in the UK.
The members of the Working Group are:
Mabel Slater (Chair, GDC DCP council member)
David Murphy (GDC lay council member)
Denis Toppin (GDC dentist council member)
Gordon Miles (GDC executive)
Amanda Little (GDC DCP policy leader)
The Group is consulting a wide range of stakeholders through a variety of methods to gain views related to all six categories of DCP registrants. The first step in the consultation process - a 'call for ideas' - will run throughout November.
The Group aims to implement new routes to registration for overseas DCPs in 2008. Updates on the key milestones of the Group, and information on how you can contribute your views, will be published on our website gdc-uk.
Notes:
The call for ideas is available on the GDC website here.
All dental technicians and dental nurses must be registered with the GDC by 30 July 2008. Registration for clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists is already compulsory. More information about registration, including application forms, is available from the GDC website at gdc-uk. You can also request an application form by contacting our Registration Team on 0845 222 4141 or GDCregistrationgdc-uk.
The GDC Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) tests the clinical skills and knowledge of overseas dentists (non-EEA) who wish to apply for registration to practise in the UK. For more information about the ORE, visit the GDC website gdc-uk.
